Should Car Wash Businesses Be Held Responsible for Stolen Vehicles?

Owners of an Atlanta car wash say they aren’t responsible for the theft of a vehicle left in their care. A woman told CBS46 that she took her truck to Bethany Auto Spa for a wash. She watched it enter the car wash tunnel but never saw it emerge.

Surveillance footage from the car wash shows a woman hid along the passenger side of the vehicle before opening the door and getting inside. Once the truck left the tunnel, the thief was able to drive off. Police later recovered the stolen truck which had been stripped for parts, including its tires.

The victim, who only has insurance to cover what damage she does to other vehicles, said the car wash has not assumed any responsibility even though they were in possession of her key and vehicle immediately before it was stolen. An attorney who spoke to the station said consumers looking to get their cars washed should avoid businesses that claim to have limited liability insurance.

The car wash manager said the business was not responsible because the car wasn’t stolen by an employee. We’ll keep an eye on this story to see if anything comes out of it in the courtroom.
