It seems more and more car washes are opening every day, which is why this story out of Pennsylvania is surprising. The owners of a chain in the area of their hometown Hyndman, Pennsylvania. WCBCRadio.com reports that the owners of Diamond Shine Car Wash have decided to close due to the economy.
The original story was reported by The Cumberland Times News, which said that all of the car washes in the chain have now shut their doors. The owners, Steve and Tammy Leydig, had as many as five locations when their business was at its best. The couple said they peaked at the turn of the century, but that it’s been downhill since.
“We have been in this business for 25 years,” Steve Leydig said. “We want to say thanks to all of our customers over the years. We made a lot of friends.”
The couple bought their first car wash in Motor City, Pennsylvania back in 1992. Their second was in LaVale, Pennsylvania, three years later in 1995. They bought their third three years after that in 1998. At various points, they owned and operated locations in Hannah Plaza, Cresaptown and Somerset.
We reported last year that the car wash industry is apparently booming. It’s something you’ve likely noticed anecdotally, but a study confirmed that the shift in business models toward waterless products and mobile operations has created opportunities for new and existing business owners.
